5 Reasons to try a 7am class

"I guarantee if you get up early in the morning and you work out and you work hard, you will have a better day — 100% guaranteed." - Jocko Willink

Therefore what better way to kick off 2018 than by signing up to one of the 7am classes and reaping the numerous benefits that training in the morning gives you. Not only will it improve your fitness and boxing skills but there are plenty of other reasons backed by science to give it a go.

1. You will be far more productive for the rest of the day.

Getting up early and heading to boxing while the rest of London is sleeping is the best way to start your Tuesday or Thursday. After an hour of skipping, bag work and pads you will arrive at work energized and more focused on the day ahead with research showing that exercising early in the morning is linked to an increased in brainpower.

2. Burn more fat

You burn more calories throughout the day when you do a morning workout than you would if you did one in the evening, with researchers in Japan discovering that fat oxidisation is maximised if you workout before breakfast as it mimics the fasting state and can help kick start weight loss. Also making the sacrifice to get up early will subconsciously make you work harder and also look for other ways to complement your training with other areas of life such as a better diet.

3. Become a better boxer

With the 7am classes having more focus on the technical aspects of boxing you will have more opportunity to learn the finer arts of the sport. This includes more attention on throwing punches at different speeds and from different angles but also more emphasis on balance and footwork. Physically they are usually the toughest sessions of the week too so a great way of testing your mental will as well.

4. Be more disciplined and therefore more successful

They say that there are 3 keys to success: Discipline, Discipline and Hard Work. Not hitting that snooze button early in the morning and getting yourself down to Fitzroy Lodge gives you the opportunity to prove to yourself that you are serious about your training and reaping the many benefits of it. It takes discipline to get out of bed early, but that sets the tone and the pattern of discipline for the rest of the day which will then flow over to other areas of your life.

5. It makes you sleep better

Research has shown that those who start their workout early in the morning, rather than at lunchtime or in the evening, will sleep better with their body promoting deeper and longer cycles of sleep. Another crucial and often overlook element of recovery.

Finish it off with a cold shower…

If you really want to reap the full benefits of your morning workout treat yourself to a cold shower. Not only will it help you feel wide awake upon leaving the gym but there’s some science to the madness as well. It will help you recover faster by squeezing out all that lactic acid that would have built up during the session so that you are ready to go for your next class.
